I personally talked to immigration officer when I re-entered US few months back. According to him, if you have a valid visa for atleast one day, you will have no problem to re-enter. But you passport should be not expire within six months after the day you enter.

make sure you have yoru i-20 signed by your international advisor and passport with valid visa. You would be fine. Me and my friend got visa at the same time and was about to expire on the may. We went to nepal 6 months prior to the expiration ( on december) exactly like you. I renewed my visa in nepal, but my friend did not. There was not a single question asked to us ( both of us). So you will be fine. Enjoy your trip.
